WHO Collaborating Centre in Tuberculosis Laboratory Strengthening – Supranational Reference Laboratory for TB
The mission of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (SRSI) is to conduct innovative research to benefit the care and cure of our patients and also to provide state-of-the-art education and training for new generations of doctors, physician scientists and research scientists with a high level of social responsibility. To achieve this objective, we want to perform cutting-edge science and to advance the knowledge of human diseases resulting in the identification of novel therapies.
The Emerging Bacterial Pathogens Unit (EBPU) headed by Dr. Daniela Maria Cirillo was established in 2003 with the aim to perform advanced mycobacterial diagnosis, to support development of new tools for TB detection and to study the pathogenic mechanisms of DR-TB. The Unit is the Italian reference centre for molecular surveillance of MDR-TB, typing and testing drug susceptibility to new drugs Delamanid and Bedaquiline. EBPU has been recognized as WHO Supranational Reference Laboratory for TB, as WHO Collaborating Centre ITA-98 and as ESCMID collaborative centre.
In addition, we serve as a liaison between basic and industrial research and maintains long standing collaborations with diagnostic manufacturers in the development and validation of new diagnostic platforms for M. tuberculosis.
The E-DETECT TB Team
The Emerging Bacterial Pathogens Unit (EBPU) headed by Dr. Daniela Maria Cirillo was established with the aim to perform advanced diagnosis of drug resistant pathogens, to support development of new tools for TB detection and to study the pathogenic mechanisms leading DR-TB.
EBPU staff consists of a group of dynamic young researchers whose common goal is moving toward TB elimination by increasing knowledge on the molecular basis of the disease and by identifying new diagnostic options.
In addition to scientists, undergraduate and graduate students bring their enthusiasm in a discipline that is in continuous evolution. Presently EBPU staff includes MDs, microbiologists, postdocs, PhD students, laboratory technicians, biologists and bioinformatics. They are also actively involved in promoting health and early diagnosis of tuberculosis in under-studied and under-served population.
